FACINE 24 HIGHLIGHTS: Gawad Gintong Ani honoree Nick Deocampo cites importance of education. supports FACINE's thrust on film literacy; Mikhail Red's BIRDSHOT dominates awards night with 7 wins; San Francisco film audience celebrates diversity of Filipino cinema
In what could be a signal of paradigm shift of FACINE's direction, as festival and venue for community engagement in the years to come, Gawad Gintong Ani honoree, filmmaker, educator and film historian, Prof. Nick Deocampo, both in his acceptance address and workshop interaction, at a most historic moment, celebrating both the Centenary of FIlipino cinema and 120th year anniversary of film in Asia, emphasized the need to study our cinematic history, be mindful of our cinematic legacy and express his commitment to support FACINE's work in the area of film literacy as a vital component of the organization and of the festival.
Other special honorees, the FACINE Gawad Lingap Sining, the two institutions that have advocated for preservation and restoration of Filipino films, SOFIA (Society of Filipino Archivists for Film) and the ABS-CBN Film Restoration Project/Sagip Pelikula Advocacy Campaign, highlighted the significant role of archiving and preservation in the study of Filipino film, as delivered by their representative, Ms. Josephine Atienza, who herself was instrumental in the establishment of these institutions.
This year's Gawad Sulong Sine honoree, Australian filmmaker and historian, Andrew Leavold, was presented his award during his lecture at the Bayanihan Center last Wednesday. The other honoree, Evelyn Vargas-Knaebel, was not able to make it to the festival to receive her award.
FACINE 24 - the screenings of both the short and feature-length films - became one of the most successful to date, in FACINE history, four films of different styles and genres sold out proving that the Filipino American community is open to such diverse programming.
