Still on Mindanaoan cinema. An experience shared by a kindred spirit, Evelyn Vargas-Knaebel. Salamat.

"Many years ago it was my dream to discover, develop and distribute Mindanao Cinema. In 1993 as Project Development staff at NCCA Cinema Dept the year it was conceived by the late national artist, Eddie Romero and headed by one of the pioneering independent filmmaker and former executive director of Mowelfund Film Institute, Nick Deocampo together with my colleauges Elvert Banares and Arwin Ignacio under the leadership of Carmen Padilla, we were able to launched the first Sinugbo Film Festival Cebu at Ayala Center and the Federation of Film Clubs nationwide with then CCP film head Ed Cabagnot. This was my first encounter with the Cinema from the South thereafter i rediscover myself and discover the world of cinema and the film community players. It was a challenging experience since I was only equiped with my PETA OAO, Mowelfund Film Institute studies and training on European Television including BBC and Thames with PETA BROADCAST & FILM. However, it didnt stop me and my passion for theater and film that led me to an advocacy to help promote Philippine Cinema in this side of the world. Until I discover the Mindanao Film Festival, Salamindanaw and the emerging filmmakers of Mindanao at the 67th Venice Film Festival, Guttierez Mangansakan with his Limbunan while I'm helping promote Lav Diaz film in Orizonti. Before Venice his two films Ebolusyon and Heremias was selected at the 2002 Fribourg IFF the former featured in the Panorama of Philippine Cinema: Revolution of Digital Cinema which I curated with the help of Marina Mottin then Assistant to the Festival Director Martial Knaebel. Heremias won the Jury Prize that year though there was technical problem. The Philippine delegation that year was headed by Pete Lacaba as jury member, Lav Diaz and Ellen Ongkeke with her film Pusang Gala which was a success. They presented the Philippine Cinema situation in a forum which was well attended! Today that dream is not only a reality but still Mindanao Cinema and the filmmakers should be given focus as they are the least supported. Its not a coincidence that last year Mangansakan's Morotomorrow Book 1: Daughters of the Three Tailed Banners won at the World Cinema Film Festival and his docu film at the Cinemaone and also the recent film Tugpo by Arbi Barbi at the SINAG MAYNILA. Theres also internationally known filmmakers from the region whose works are truly execeptional that needs to be supported and promoted like Sherad Sanchez, Sheron Dayoc, Arnel Mardoquio, Ryan Murcea, Joe Bacus and Liryc dela Cruz to name a few but there are many more. Hope that the power players in the film industry and govt agencies like FDCP, NCCA, etc continue to look at this growing Mindanao Cinema! INSHALLAH! I am fortunate enough to be a part of your diverse cinema. I may not be from Mindanao but I'm from the South! MABUHAY KAYO AT MARAMING SALAMAT!"
